Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary


Kumarakom bird sanctuary is among the finest bird sanctuaries of India. Located on the banks of Vembanad lake, sanctuary is spread in an area of 14 acres of land. The sanctuary is set in the backwaters of Kerala and is a favourite haunt for migratory birds. The scenic location of the sanctuary makes it a paradise for the nature lovers. A visit here will give you the pleasure to meet variety of migratory birds that come here during the winters from Himalayas, China and Siberia.
Kumarakom bird sanctuary attracts thousands of bird lovers and ornithologists every year. Known for its varied avian population, Kumarakom bird sanctuary is a favourite haunt of local varieties such as cuckoos, owls, egret, heron, water duck and waterfowls, as well as the migratory Siberian Cranes, Indian Peafowl, Parrots, Larks and Wood Beetles which can be witnessed during the months of October to April.
Best Time to Visit
The sanctuary enjoys tropical climate throughout the year. It is open all round the year except during the monsoon months. During winters the temperature is cool and is the best time to watch migratory birds in a pleasant setting. Early morning is the best time for bird watching when the birds leave their nests and fly over the lake.
Best way to explore the bird sanctuary is to take a houseboat or motorboat cruise which enables the visitors to sight the birds without disturbing them.
