Idukki

It is one of the most popular hill districts of Kerala and has rightly earned its place among the famous hill stations of India. This district is specially popular for its breathtaking hills and dense jungles. Being the rich source of water, Idukki meets the need of around 66% of Kerala's power generation through various hydroelectric projects. Around 50% of the area has been declared as forest reserve. Idukki is located in the southern part of state and is a landlocked area. Mother nature has blessed this district with admirable wild life sanctuaries, majestic hill stations, sublime spice plantation and towering mountain treks. Here you will find yourself very close to mother nature.

Idukki is the second largest district of Kerala. Some of the popular rivers of the state like Periyar, Thodupuzhayar and Thalayar flow through this rugged district. Idukki Arch Dam, constructed across the Periyar river between Kuravan and Kurathi hill, is the second highest dam of India. Anamudi, one of the highest peak of south India is also located in this district. This district was formed in the year 1972 by carving out some taluks from erstwhile Kottayam and Ernakulam district. Idukki has varied and scintillating tourists destinations.

Munnar: It is one of the most popular hill stations of Kerala. This place is engulfed with stunning tea plantations and alluring hills. It used to be the summer resort of the former British rulers during colonial era. It has a rich flora and fauna. Munnar is an idyllic destination for a lazy vacation. Situated at an altitude of 1600 m above sea level, Munnar has serene atmosphere and absolute greenery which will be treat to your eyes.

Devikulam : Situated at an altitude of 1800 m above sea, Devikulam is the ultimate destination for the lovers of nature. This virgin land has been blessed with many hidden natural beauties. The most popular attraction of this town is Sita Devi Lake. This lake has a religious value as it is believed that Sita, wife of lord Rama, use to take bath here. The lake also offers adventure activities like fishing. Another popular attraction is Pallivasal Waterfall, which is always teemed with the visitors. Tea plantations in and around Devikulam is another attraction of this sleepy town.

Idukki Dam
: This dam, built between two granite hill Kuruvan and Kurathi, is the world's second largest and Asia's first arch dam. Built over the Periyar river, this dam is 550 ft high and 650 ft wide. Sheer might of this dam attracts large number of tourists to this place.

Idukki Wild Life Sanctuary
: This wild life sanctuary covers two taluks of Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola of Idukki district. It is spread around the area of 77 sq km and is situated around 450-748 m above sea level. This sanctuary houses different variety of flora and fauna. Some of the popular wild animals found here are tiger, wild boar, wild dogs, jungle cats, etc. You can also sight different varieties of reptiles and birds in this wild life sanctuary.
